The area around glutschaufel is so beautiful and unique that it is protected: This area "Großer Rußweiher " is located in the beautiful Upper Palatinate district Neustadt an der Waldnaab. It is home to many rare birds, aquatic animals and plants. But to reduce this region of pure natural beauty would be a big mistake. Thanks to the geographical location, glutschaufel is the starting point to a variety of cultural and urban highlights.
The Great Rußweiher on our doorstep belongs to the pond area of Eschenbach and is located in the nature park „Northern Upper Palatinate Forest". As a sensitive bird breeding area with its lakes Paulusweiher, Rußlohweiher, Thallerweiher and some adjacent forest areas, they are of great importance. People can walk around the Great Rußweiher only on a marked trail so as not to interfere with the variety of wildlife.
During a hike you will watch dragonflies, vipers and grass snakes, which are on the hunt for frogs. For some time now there are even fire salamanders with their highly eye-catching color. Hikers are also accompanied by several species of ducks, e.g. the tufted duck or the red-headed pochard. Not to be missed are the songs of coots. And if you are lucky, you can spot grey herons, kingfishers and ospreys. Many observation pulpits provide insights into these breeding areas.
In Eschenbach and surroundings you will find a lot of interesting places to discover. Our Inspirations for you …

Bavaria is beautiful, but so too is America and if you want a taste of the American lifestyle in the heart of the Upper Palatinate, we recommend a visit of the city of Grafenwoehr. For in the city, which is very close to glutschaufel, is one of the largest military training courses in the US Army. Many GIs and American pickup trucks dominate the cityscape. Here, incidentally, was where none other than Elvis Presley competed for military service on November 3, 1958. The King of Rock'N Roll also plays a role in the Upper Palatinate's 1. Cultural and Military Museum in Grafenwoehr.
